Bijou Gallery and Salon is an American original. The salon combines hairstyling and fine art. It is conveniently located approximately one mile from the epicenter of downtown Colorado Springs at 2103 E. Bijou St. With 16 feet of north facing plate glass windows, it is the perfect painting studio. The great lighting assists June Heimsoth not only with her painting tasks, but with her hair coloring. Hair coloring is the backbone of June’s business - 49% of her clients are color service users. There is a reason for that; June’s color skills create natural looking color, resulting in healthier hair - which she considers to be most important.

June doesn’t stop at the hair; She routinely examines the scalp. After finding a malignant melanoma on a client twenty years ago, she threw herself into the study of skin cancer. She believes that hair stylists and barbers could be foremost in early skin cancer detection - certainly those hidden on the scalp. “No one looks up there but us,” June says. June does NOT diagnose skin cancer; she only makes her clients aware of suspicious lesions and when she sees them she strongly suggests people see their dermatologist. Her tenacity has resulted in dozens of people nipping early skin cancers in the bud and perhaps saving lives.

June practices holistic cosmetology - meaning she doesn’t stop with the skin, hair, and nails, she knows you are what you eat and drink (and don’t drink). Suffice it to say, you won’t find a soda machine inBijou Gallery.

June’s razor cuts are sculpture in that often the hair requires little styling as a great haircut almost styles itself. June believes hair care should be affordable. June also believes the person in her chair is very important and since their hair is with them 24/7, it needs to be right. She seems to know just what people need. She says, “Experience is a wonderful thing.”
